A Day In The Life At Newport Harbor Recovery
It's six a.m. and it's time to get up and get ready to start my day. I quickly get up, make my bed and get in the shower. After showering and getting dressed I have to hurry to the carport to be on time. Lombardi time that is. Lombardi time is Dee's way of saying don't just be on time, be 15 minutes early to everything at NHR and in life. At six thirty we head out for the seven a.m. A.A. meeting. At the meeting I get to participate in my sobriety. Listening to fellow AA'ers with lots of sobriety is very helpful and important in my recovery. After the meeting I get a few minutes to hang out with the people that were in the meeting. That made it really easy for me to get to know some of the guys in AA and aided in choosing my sponsor.
On the way home from the meeting I decide weather there is anything I need to speak to the director about. If I need to speak to him, he is available to talk to. If I don't need to see him, than I head back to my house where my room mates and I make breakfast and do our daily house cleaning chores. After the choresI can choose to reada book, or just hang out with the guys.
At11:00there is an educational group that we must attend. During this group, we work on such thingsas relapse prevention and discussion. This group is great, ithelps me think about what tools I can use to stay sober.Staying sober is the ultimate goal, and with the education provided in group, there is only one thing needed to continue to stay sober, and that's a complete effort in my part.
After the group, I can chose to go to the gym, the market, local stores,or just hang around the grounds for a few hours. In this down time, I can do my laundry and make lunch. I like to have fun with the guys and make lunch. Wealways eat like kings around here. Everybody in my house has something special thatthey like to cook, and no matter what it is, it's always great. After lunch we often play a board game, orthrow somehorseshoes. Horseshoes is great, competition is fierce.
After an early afternoon of fun and games, it's time to go to the 3:00 process group. This group consists of a brief lecture followed by group participation. Everyone gets a chance to share a little about how their day is going or about something that they are having trouble with. This group is really helpful for me. It lets me know that I'm not the only one with questions in sobriety.
After the group has concluded, it's T.V. time. After all my daily chores are done I get to relax for a few hours and hang out in front of the boob tube.A few hours of T.V. is nice after a stimulating day of learning. It's almost dinner time and I have to decide weather I want to eat before or after the evening meeting. I like to eat a snack around five o'clock and then get ready for the evening meeting. The evening meeting is typically a large one, and it's fun. It's nice to see so many other people trying to better their lives as I am.
After the evening meetingis over and I am home for the night, I like to pick up the phone and call my sponsor and tell him how my day went. He typically instills in me that I'm doing exactly what I should be.At last it's dinner time. Are we going to have tacos, burgers or order pizza, that's a tough one. Pizza it is. I love pizza.
After dinner I typically catch a few hours of t.v. breaking for a bit to hang with the guys or call my family.
All in all the day goes by at a steady pace with little or no idle time. After a few hours of enjoyable relaxation, its At ten thirty I retire to my room, get ready for bed, and fall asleep. Amazingly before I know it, its six a.m. and its time to get up and get going once again.
As explained, Newport Harbor Recovery is the place for me. Together with a great support staff and wonderful clients I now call N.H.R. home. Thanks to N.H.R. I am once again beginning to have a wonderful life.
